MATTITUCK STEWARDSHIP SITE

Background + Goals
Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program and Strong’s Marine have been working together for years on various efforts to improve the health of our bays. Back in 2018 we expanded our partnership in support of the Long Island Shellfish Restoration Project in which Strong’s played an important role in the production of shellfish. For the duration of the project period they hosted 10 FLUPSY’s at their marina, enabling the CCE Marine Team to grow millions of juvenile clams in support of water quality improvement.
Today, Strong’s still plays a vital role as a satellite production facility for our aquaculture efforts and 2021 marked the first year that shellfish were grown on site specifically to support the Back to the Bays Initiative. Work is also underway to assess the potential of conducting eelgrass restoration in Mattituck Inlet, as well as determine the feasibility of carrying out coastal resiliency projects in the area, all while educating the public through stewardship and educational sessions hosted at Strong’s Mattituck properties. By including this location in our Back to the Bays network, we will be able to significantly expand our shellfish and habitat restoration work in waters off the North Fork. We invite you to help us reach our fundraising goals by providing any level of support to our Mattituck Stewardship site by making a donation today.
Current Work Underway
Strong’s Yacht Club FLUPSYs + Mattituck Inlet Seeding:
Strong’s Yacht Center in Mattituck has been hosting CCE Marine Program’s floating upweller systems (FLUPSYs) for numerous years, providing nursery space for us to grow millions of clams and oysters for our shellfish enhancement program with Southold Town, and to seed at our Back to the Bays Stewardship sites across the East End. We are fundraising with the goal of seeding 100,000 of these hard clams grown on property directly into Mattituck Inlet in fall 2024. Every $100 donated supports 1,000 baby clams. Donors who provide support at $500 level and above will even be invited to help us seed the clams grown at the Strong’s nursery into the inlet in Fall 2024! For more information on our hard clam restoration efforts, please contact our Back to the Bays Aquaculture Coordinator Kate at kr474@cornell.edu.
Mattituck Inlet Eelgrass Restoration Site Assessment + Test Planting:
In efforts to further enhance habitat availability in Mattituck Inlet, a site suitability study followed by an eelgrass test planting was conducted in Fall of 2023. We will be monitoring this site in Spring 2024 to assess it’s further potential to support a full scale restoration planting in Fall 2024!
Key Partners + Funders
Strong’s Marine has been an incredible supporter of CCE Marine Program and is the lead sponsor for the Mattituck Stewardship Site, helping to leverage $25,000+ per year in support of the efforts being conducted at this site.
The Marilyn Lichtman Foundation has also been instrumental in providing funds to support the growing of shellfish in our hatchery, and the work being conducted at our Strong’s Marine Stewardship Site.
We also rely on community support and thank our private donors and local establishments such as Mattituck Environmental and the Clamity Janes for their generous contributions to these efforts.
Involvement + Giving Opportunities
We are excited to engage with the North Fork community, and offer many ways for individuals and groups to get involved! In years past we have conducted numerous education programs, mini-camps and special events at Strong’s Water Club thanks to the generous support of Strong’s Marine. Info on 2024 involvement opportunities in our shellfish and habitat restoration work conducted at this site, and details on upcoming outreach and education events coming soon!
In order to expand upon these efforts in 2024 and beyond we have launched the Strong’s Marine Mattituck Back to the Bays Giving Campaign and are seeking contributions of any level to help support this work. Contributions of fully tax deductible and can be made via the DONATE button at the top of this page.
